Houseboating on Lake Kariba
October 2017
A short while ago, I had the privilege of houseboating on Lake Kariba. I had been to Kariba several times before, but never on a houseboat and I can confidently say that for anyone visiting the lake, houseboating is the way to go.
After boarding, the boat travels far across the lake to different islands on the lake which can take several hours in the day. Once far from mainland, you truly feel fully immersed in the wildlife that surrounds you. No lights, sounds or man-made structures as far as the eye can see. Simply the peace and quiet of nature and the curious visitors that come from their surrounding natural habitats.
On our four day trip, we saw many buck, crocodiles, hippos, buffalos, birdlife and elephants as well as caught a variety of different fish. Days were filled with nature watching, relaxing in the sun, and eating good food prepared by our on-board chef. Afternoons were for fishing, game drives with the captain and some of the most unrivalled sunsets I’ve ever seen (from our aptly named boat, the Sundowner).
Lake Kariba is always a breathtaking place to visit, but this houseboating trip is certainly one engrained in my best memories forever.
